The 1970 Lancia Stratos HF Zero Bertone Coupe has won the Gran Turismo Trophy at this year’s Peddle Beach Concours d’Elegance event in California.
According to the Concours, the Polyphony Digital-sponsored award is handed out to “the most significant car present balancing both artistic beauty and performance at the highest level and will be included in the next Gran Turismo digital game.”
Owned by Phillip Sarofim of Beverly Hills, this one-off was styled by Marcello Gandini as a precursor to the road and rally-stage dwelling Stratos that would follow in 1973.
Gandini passed in March of this year and also went on to design the Lamborghini Countach, first-generation BMW 5-Series, initial Lamborghini Diablo prototypes and the Citroën BX. The Italian designer also created the 1969 Autobianchi A112 Runabout Bertone, winner of the Gran Turismo Trophy in 2022.
Showcased on the lawns of the Pebble Beach Golf Links venue, the concept car also won its class – the ‘Wedge-Shaped Concept Cars & Prototypes Early’. Meanwhile, owner Sarofim won the Lorin Tryon Trophy and the car was included on the event’s poster.
While a concept, it runs, and access is granted by an opening windscreen with space for two rather cramped occupants.
Pebble Beach Gran Turismo Trophy history
Eight cars in the contemporary game have won the award previously, a tradition that first began in 2008.
Following the recent winner, eight cars are also in the backlog, awaiting potential virtual recreation.
This includes the three most recent champions. Namely, the 1969 Ferrari 512 S Berlinetta that won in 2021, the aforementioned Autobianchi victorious in 2022 and last year’s medalist, the 1933 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 Gran Sport Figoni Coupé.
The 2024 gathering marked the second year in succession that series producer Kazunori Yamauchi was absent from the dais.
Third in the same class as the Stratos, and previous GT Trophy winner, was the 1960 Plymouth XNR Ghia Roadster. Gran Turismo players may recognise it from Gran Turismo 6, Gran Turismo Sport and Gran Turismo 7. The runner-up was the 1955 Ghia Streamline X “Glida” Coupe.
A 1934 Bugatti Type 59 Sports won overall Best in Show.
