Is Forza Horizon 5 too expensive on PS5?

Back in 2021 when Forza Horizon 5 was released as a tentpole Xbox Series X|S, and PC, title for Microsoft, the odds on it ever appearing on PlayStation 5 would have been astronomical.

There’d have been more chance of life on Mars or Huddersfield Town winning the Premier League than the Forza franchise hitting a Sony device.

Yet, on the 29th April 2025, that is exactly what will happen, as Playground Games’ Mexican-based driving game releases for PS5.

It’s all part of Microsoft’s grand plan of spreading the Xbox brand from consoles, into PC apps, subscriptions, mobile streaming services and even releasing games on rival devices. It follows the likes of Sea of Thieves and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle in also hitting PlayStation.

But, now the release date and price have been announced, does it cost too much on PS5?

Well, in one sense, it is priced well – it’s the same price as on the green machine, and only slightly more expensive than on the PC store Steam.

The base price comes in around $10/£15 lower than a full-fat AAA release in 2025.

On the other hand, this will be three-and-a-half years old come the PS5 launch, and since birth, has been part of several price-reducing sales on both Xbox and PC.

It’s also worth considering that a great number of players enjoyed Horizon 5 as part of a rolling Game Pass subscription, so didn’t necessarily feel the purchase hit – although still paying somewhere between $11.99/£9.99 to £14.99/$19.99 per month in perpetuity for the privilege.

Forza Horizon 5 PS5 pricing and release date

Horizon 5 is not currently on a PlayStation Plus subscription tier, in comparison. Nor is there a physical copy confirmed (yet), so there’s no residual trade-in value.

Certainly charging for old DLC and a form of early access in the Deluxe and Premium editions could seem a bit much so long after it was first launched. Pricing of the Ultimate DLC bundle and individual car packs are yet to be announced too, so this is likely to be north of £125/$150 all-in. Owch.

Still, looking at the PlayStation Store pre-order section, as Traxion Discord member OrionStarri pointed out, FH5 takes three of the top 10 spots.

Taking all of those viewpoints into consideration, we’d like to hear your thoughts. Vote in the poll and leave a comment below!

  1. That’s the point, it’s a double dip from MS, exactly the same thing Sony are doing on PC. if you wanted the game cheaper or wanted to play it all all, you could’ve done so for as cheap as a game pass subscription 3 years ago.

    1. Yes, good point – although that’s assuming you have access to a PC and Xbox…

And Sony’s PC games were around £20/$20 cheaper when they came to PC than initial PS5 launch (looking at Spider-man 2 specifically) – so food for thought.
