Gran Turismo 7 developer visited by legendary car designer

A hint at things to come? Possibly not, but certainly a sign that Gran Turismo is well respected within the automotive industry.

Esteemed car designer Giorgetto Giugiaro has visited the Japanese headquarters of Gran Turismo 7 creator Polyphony Digital – according to a social media post by series producer Kazunori Yamauchi.

Now aged 86, the garlanded stylist is best known for his work on the Lancia Delta, DMC DeLorean, first-generation Volkswagen Golf, Fiat Panda and Iso Grifo.

Particular Giugiaro-designed standouts, which are featured within Gran Turismo 7, include the sensational De Tomaso Mangusta and the lithe Alfa Romeo Giulia Sprint GT.

Lesser-known works include the Subaru SVX, Suzuki SX4, FSO Polonez and Daewoo Lanos – you can’t win them all.

The deified Italian is pictured autographing a scale model of one of his designs, the Lotus Espirit. This is particularly notable, as Gran Turismo 6 was the last GT game to feature the Norfolk brand, as it skipped both GT Sport and Gran Turismo 7.

Giugiaro also designed 11 cameras for Nikon, a selection of which can be seen on display at the Polyphony gathering alongside a Lancia Delta model. Photography is one of the key pillars of the Gran Turismo games.

Does this appearance confirm the existence of Gran Turismo 8? Perhaps a new Giugiaro Vision Gran Turismo concept? No, neither.

But, much like Pharrell Williams’ visit last year, it goes some way to showcase Gran Turismo’s status within culture outside of pixels.
