Split/Second (Velocity) is one of our all-time favourite arcade racing experiences, but sadly publisher Disney Interactive never really gave it a fair shake upon its release in 2010.

Despite critical acclaim, Disney shuttered developer Black Rock Studios soon after the game’s release. Aside from a surprising solid PSP version, created by Sumo Digital, that was the last we heard of the explosive racer.

Until now, as Electric Square – creators of Forza Street – is about to launch Detonation Racing. Electric Square was formerly Climax Racing which was founded by ex-Black Rock employees.

The Apple App Store description for the game mentions that you will: “tactically collapse and disintegrate the track to open new routes, and risk hazardous shortcuts to gain competitive advantage.”

Sound familiar?

From the early screenshots and teaser trailer, it looks like Split/Second shrunk down and that is a very good thing.

It will feature nine cars, six tracks and unlockable paint schemes, with the kooky Dr Boom leading you through the progression.

There’s no release date yet, but the game will be exclusive to Apple Arcade subscribers across iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV.
