As revealed today, the eternally popular sandbox driving game BeamNG.drive will hit the PS5 on 19th October, but not every feature from the PC version will carry over.

Although the console port will run on the same game engine and include all the modes, cars, and Scenarios of its home-computer cousin, one crucial aspect will not be present at launch: modding.

“In general, BeamNG aims to achieve feature parity across platforms where possible,” read an official statement.

“Mod support for PlayStation will not be available at launch: supporting mods on console is a unique challenge, and while the possibilities are being explored, the timing and scope cannot be confirmed at this stage. Mod authoring tools, such as the World Editor, are not currently planned for PlayStation,” it concluded.

Although modding has been ruled out at launch, and the powerful World Editor has pretty much been kiboshed for the PS5, it’s still possible the Beam team will introduce console mods in future, especially as the likes of Farming Simulator, SnowRunner and Project Motor Racing have proved it can be done.

The above titles utilise their own console mod marketplace systems to oversee and approve community-made mods, ensuring compatibility and quality before the general public can download and use them in-game. This also helps address any fuzzy legal issues around licensing.

Fortunately, BeamNG already uses a proprietary Mod Repository system on PC, so hopes are high that a version of this will feature on PS5 in time.

One further note on modding is that compatibility with cars built in Automation – The Car Company Tycoon Game will not be possible considering it isn’t currently on PS5. Shame.
