Assetto Corsa Rally’s next update aiming for three new cars

Assetto Corsa Rally’s most recent update added Greek stages and the first phase of online multiplayer. But, Version 0.5, unlike the preceding 0.4 update, omitted new vehicles.

That will change with the upcoming v0.6 patch, which is set to include three new cars, provided the licensors sign off on the models.

This is according to the Game Director Irvin Zonca on a recent community Q&A session. While he wasn’t able to confirm the vehicles, he did provide some clues.

“[They] will be another French car and two German cars,” he teased.

“I would like to say more and I’m very, very, sorry I can’t just say everything, because I would, but they are all four-wheel-drive cars spanning through a few decades.”

The “spanning a few decades” line indicates that the trio aren’t necessarily all from the same era. Four-wheel drive indicates vehicles from the 1980s onwards. The Audi Quattro (main article image, for illustrative purposes only) pioneered four driven wheels, hitting the stages from 1981 onwards, before other rivals followed suit.

However, with the clue being vague and spanning multiple vehicles, a 2010s Volkswagen Polo WRC, for example, also meets the criteria. However, our money would be on one of the German cars to be an Audi, at least, given the brand’s provenance in rallying.

The simulation already features a French car with both front and rear axles driven, the Citroën Xsara. Both Peugeot and Citroën have seen success in rallying, from the 1980s Group B Peugeot 205, to the Citroen C4 WRC and DS3 WRCs. The C3 Rally2 is a recent model from the brand, too, while the Peugeot 207 dominated mid-’00s S2000 events.

A present-day obscure pick would be the Renault Clio Rally3, last seen as DLC for EA SPORTS WRC.

There was also the ill-fated Citroën BX 4TC, but the less said about that, the better…

The plan is for these three vehicles in the next update, pending approvals.

“Until we have an official approval from the manufacturer, I’m not allowed to say what cars will come,” said Zonca.

“We are aiming to bring you three new cars. Hopefully, it will be possible to do so if we get all the approvals, which is not automatic.”

Two dream Fiats

Zonca also let on about two cars he would “like to have in the game”. Both Fiats, one is the hot hatch Uno Turbo. Its boxy styling and diminutive front-wheel drive layout were used in Group A rallying during the 1980s.

The other is the somewhat obscure Fiat Abarth X1/9 Prototipo front he 1970s, something designed to replace the Lancia Stratos. However, the Fiat Abarth 131 became the preeminent Italian force instead.

“It’s an exceptional car that, as far as I know, has never been featured in a rally game, and I’d like to bring it into [Assetto Corsa Rally] the game,” he said.

It follows comments that updated throttle and tyre models are also in active development.
