If you’re waiting for Wreckfest 2 to leave early access, there is an alternative destruction racer. Trail Out is a spiritual successor to FlatOut, the series that Wreckfest developer Bugbear Games helmed before it lost the rights to the franchise.
Compared to Wreckfest, Trail Out is more arcade-focused and over-the-top, with lighter vehicle handling, fully destructible environments and even a silly story mode. In another callback to FlatOut, drivers can also be ejected through the windscreen.
Now, three years after the original game’s release, developer Good Boys has made that surprise announcement that a sequel is in development.
It’s going to be a long wait, however, because Trail Out 2 is set to release in 2028, with the studio looking to hire a level designer and 3D artist in the meantime. Platforms are yet to be confirmed.
While only a work-in-progress logo has been released so far, Good Boys has shared some early details about the sequel.
The developer is “focusing on online,” suggesting that the sequel will include online multiplayer – a sorely absent feature in the first game.
According to the announcement, Trail Out 2 is being developed “from scratch,” with new physics, graphics and a story mode with new characters. However, the biggest revelation is that the story mode will feature an open world, though no other details were announced.

The sequel’s surprise announcement comes after Trail Out’s v5.0 update. Dubbed the “biggest update in Trail Out’s history,” the update adds two new tracks set in Tokyo, alongside three new vehicles and improved visuals and car physics.
It also introduces a new ‘Dash’ combat racing mode with 13 weapons and a revamped story mode with improved animations. Full patch notes can be found below.
Coinciding with the update is a new Tokyo Car Rush DLC pack containing three cars:
- Surge Q-Line
- Bamby
- Revolutor X
The DLC pack costs £4.29 / $4.99.
Trail Out launched in September 2023 on PC, with an Xbox Series X|S port following in April 2024. A PlayStation 5 port is also in development and slated for release in 2025.
