Ultimate Godspeed is a new karting game with a twist. Developer Ninoko has pitched the title as a ‘party racing game’ where the emphasis is placed on multiplayer battling.
The premise of Ultimate Godspeed sees players controlling all-powerful deities who can pick and place obstacles on tracks before races. Placing these strategically is the key to defeating your opponents, with up to four players able to compete locally via split-screen.
Obstacles include oil slicks, swinging axes, ramps, bombs, poison pits and lightning bolts, with players scoring points if their opponents succumb to their dastardly traps.
These also stay on the map in subsequent rounds, meaning races get more frantic as time passes. Players can also use objects to create shortcuts through the map, with bonus points available for breaking the track record.
The party game aspect shines through as players scramble to collect the most powerful power-ups before a race, although the element of surprise is lost in terms of their placement since everyone can look at your screen anyway (reminding us of the screen-watching shenanigans found in Nintendo 64’s Goldeneye 007 multiplayer).
It’s not just local PvP on offer, however, as the game will ship with online multiplayer for up to at least eight players.
Ultimate Godspeed currently has an unspecified release date for the moment, but Ninoko plans to deliver it for PC (Steam) and Nintendo Switch. The Swiss developer also plans to attend the Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco this month, where more information may be revealed.
