If you were tasked with thinking of an ideal car to race around Circuit de la Sarthe – home of the 24 Hours of Le Mans race – I’m sure you would think of a hybrid Toyota prototype or a Porsche GTE race car.
But the weird and wonderful folks at Polyphony Digital came up for this week with…. the Mitsubishi GTO Twin Turbo ’91. Riiiight.
The GTO, or 3000GT in some markets and even sold as a Dodge Stealth in North America, was a technological tour de force, with active aerodynamics, four-wheel steer and all-wheel drive. It was also heavy and cumbersome. I love it, but I openly admit it’s just not that good.
This is what makes Gran Turismo such an interesting game, however. A strange combination, but something different that you perhaps you wouldn’t think of.
Here’s what’s in store for online Gran Turismo Sport players this week – and we’re going to try and use Mitsubishi vehicles in each, a brand name that literally translates as ‘three water chestnut’. Fun fact.
The first race this week uses the GTO at Le Mans, but with all the chicanes removed. So, you can top-out your high-tech ‘90s Japanese super-coupe down the Mulsanne Straight. With an equal-performance grid, slipstreaming will be essential, saving your move for the lead for the right moment.
With this being a single-lap race, choose it wisely.
Race B is more conventional. Any Gr.3 car of your choice around the Dragon Trail – Gardens II layout. Inferior in most ways to the original Dragon Trail circuit, and with an instant-kill kerb in the final sector, the 90-degree opening corner does at least allow for overtaking and the four-apex Turn 3 section is a unique challenge.
To round out the week is none other than the Nordschliefe in all its laser-scanned glory. Just two laps around this 12.95-mile layout that excludes the Gran Prix loop, you can select any Gr.4 car in your garage.
With 20 cars on the grid, unless you’re with a higher rank, expect a lot of biffing and barging through the first half of the lap before the field settles down.
