Assetto Corsa EVO’s long-awaited free roam mode finally has a release date. Included as part of the upcoming v0.10 update, it will launch on 9th December, allowing players to explore Germany’s Eifel region outside the Nürburgring.

In solo play, you can explore public roads, villages or venture off-road. There are also point-to-point Time Attacks with online leaderboards. Online multiplayer will also be included in the initial phase.

Speaking to Traxion at the SimRacing Expo Frankfurt, Kunos Simulazioni’s Co-Founder and Executive Manager Marco Massarutto confirmed that up to 30 players can roam around the map in a server at the same time.

As well as compete in online time attack leaderboards, you can race other players online in free roam. This will take the form of “sprint races with four participants.”

“You can join a race and invite your friends to have a race with you,” Massarutto confirmed.

As with the single-player, AI traffic vehicles will populate the roads in online free roam multiplayer sessions. Sprint races, on the other hand, will take place on closed roads without traffic.

Custom time attack routes planned for online multiplayer

In the future, Kunos Simulazioni plans to add the ability to create custom time attack routes in online multiplayer, with a scope for “infinite combinations.”

“We want to let the users define their own time attack courses with an A-to-B point,” Massarutto explained. “As you can imagine, they can have infinite combinations.” These custom courses can then be shared with other players online once the feature is added.

According to Massarutto, the free roam mode’s map size will initially be “bigger than Manhattan” at around 70km2, and will eventually expand to 1,600 km2 in future updates.

Visitors at the SimRacing Expo Frankfurt can go hands-on with a work-in-progress build of Assetto Corsa EVO’s free roam this weekend until 18th October.
