  • BeamNG.drive’s PS5 release confirmed to feature four-player local split-screen multiplayer
  • Screen can be divided in multiple ways
  • AI cars not seen in latest trailer, as PC version set to receive same mode

The hype continues to build for BeamNG.drive’s PlayStation 5 release on the 19th of October, as its development team has demonstrated another impressive feature coming to the game

Although local split-screen multiplayer was confirmed a week ago as part of the console version’s formal unveiling, the game’s PlayStation Store listing suggested local multiplayer would be for ‘1-4 players’.

Now, the Beam team has confirmed this as fact, demonstrating local multiplayer in all its glory.

In practice, local multiplayer looks to run smoothly, with players able to split the screen in all manner of ways, from equal thirds or quarters to one large window and two smaller windows when playing as three. Naturally, traditional two-player sessions can be split vertically or horizontally, using a simplified HUD

Game modes previewed so far seem to indicate that specific scenarios will be catered to multiplayer play, with car football, rock crawling, drag races and classic ‘cops and robbers’ pursuit-style gameplay types available, although we remain hopeful that the game’s open world will be accessible judging from the presence of the wide expanses of Johnson Valley.

AI cars

However, one thing not seen in the new trailer is AI cars, which makes sense given the huge performance toll that would take. Damage modelling also appeared simplified, though no significant crashes occurred in the trailer to judge it objectively.

Thankfully, however, the game appears to run smoothly with four players, which is an incredible achievement in itself. The PC version will also support local split-screen play when V0.40 drops on both PS5 and PC on 19th October, as both versions will be developed concurrently.
