After seemingly becoming vapourware, a car and track from the lost Sega-style arcade racer will be playable in the brawler Takeover 2 as a mini-game.

First announced in 2013, The ‘90s Arcade Racer was a retro-style racing game inspired by classic Sega arcade games like Daytona USA and Scud Race. It was announced so long ago that it was initially slated for Wii U alongside PC.

The project was successfully crowdfunded on Kickstarter for £16,000, with gameplay videos showcasing high-speed drifting, a variety of vehicles including a single-seater and stock car, and vibrant, Sega-style visuals.

The retro-inspired arcade racer was later acquired by publisher Nicalis, renamed ’90s Super GP and announced for PC, PS4 and Switch. Despite still being listed as “coming soon” on the publisher’s website, the game was never released and seemingly vanished into vapourware.

Several years later, The ‘90s Arcade Racer is being resurrected. As reported by YouTube channel ARC Arcade Racing, a car and track from the unreleased game are set to feature in the upcoming Streets of Rage-inspired brawler Takeover 2 as a playable mini-game dubbed Overtake.

Its original solo developer, Pelikan13, no longer owns the rights to the IP, but received permission from Nicalis to use the assets.

Incidentally, Sega’s Daytona USA 2 is also playable as an arcade mini-game in the Yakuza games Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name and Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii.

In a gameplay video, the YouTuber praises Overtake’s crisp visuals, OutRun-style drifting (which has a dedicated drift button), upbeat soundtrack and inspired track design.

Compared to the original unreleased game, the visuals adopt a cel-shaded art style to match Takeover 2’s look. Other than that, it retains the same assets seen in the original game’s 2013 reveal.

Burnout-style takedowns, dubbed as ‘Wipeouts,’ also now feature, where knocking opponents into the wall causes them to explode.

Takeover 2 is set to release on Steam on 10th September. Hopefully, the Overtake mini-game can evolve into a full-fledged arcade racer.

“All of the building blocks for a real proper arcade racer are already here,” the YouTuber concluded. “Overtake is way too good and way too accomplished to be regulated to a mere curiosity.”
