Xbox has announced its long-rumoured programme that lets players convert their physical game discs to digital. The majority of Xbox One and Xbox Series X discs will be supported, with Xbox Insiders able to test it next week on 31st August.

“This is part of our broader commitment to game preservation,” Xbox wrote in a blog. “As technology, devices, and distribution continue to evolve, preserving access to the games people own matters more than ever.”

If a game is supported, inserting the disc into an Xbox One or Xbox Series X and launching the game will allow players to claim a digital version, while the physical disc will remain playable.  Thousands of titles will be supported at launch, though not every game will be at launch.

“While not every title will be available at launch, this is an important step toward a future where players can have greater confidence that the games they buy remain with them for years to come,” Xbox wrote.

It’s a stark contrast to Sony, which is ending support for new physical PlayStation discs from January 2028 and has not announced an equivalent way for players to convert their physical games to digital so far.
