After a long period of silence, Wreckreation, an ambitious open-world sandbox racer from the original Burnout creators, appears to be teasing a comeback.

Earlier this year, publisher THQ Nordic confirmed that Wreckreation is “very much alive and in active development” and promised to share more in the “near future.”

Since then, Wreckreation’s social media presence has ramped up over the last few weeks, with regular memes and short gameplay clips. While other clips have focused on the track creator, a new 30-second gameplay clip posted on X, formerly Twitter, shows off Wreckreation’s chaotic racing, complete with takedowns and smashable billboards reminiscent of Burnout Paradise.

Everything from the visuals to the damage modelling seems to have improved since our last look at the game in summer 2023. We also love how you smash through letters spelling “finish” at the end of races.

Mercifully, Three Fields also confirmed in a reply on social media that Wreckreation will be playable offline, at a time when most open-world racers like The Crew Motorfest and Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown require an online connection.

Comparisons to Burnout are no coincidence. Several staff members at Three Fields have worked on Burnout since its inception in the early 2000s, including the studio’s co-founders, Alex Ward and Fiona Sperry.

Hopefully, this influx of teasers hints at a full reveal and release date announcement soon. If it can live up to the hype, this could be the Burnout Paradise spiritual successor we’ve been waiting for.

The arcade racer was initially announced in 2020 under the name Dangerous Driving 2 before being renamed Wreckreation in 2022. Players can team up to create crazy tracks together in real-time in an open environment known as “MixWorld.”

Incidentally, this isn’t the only destruction racer THQ Nordic is publishing, with Wreckfest 2 recently hitting Steam Access and targeting a PC and console release by March 2026.
