Tokyo Xtreme Racer PS5 and Xbox fate remains ‘to be determined’

During an AMA, developer Genki’s translator would not be drawn on console versions.

The Tokyo Xtreme Racer made a surprise return earlier this year, with stellar player numbers and sales “more than we expected,” according to developer Genki.

But, despite over 30 games in the series’ long-running history released on a console (or mobile) device of some description, the new entry is only PC only.

This is due, in part, to its current early access nature – a programme that Steam offers to release an unfinished game for cash, but usually at a discounted rate. This allows for keen community members to purchase in the nascent stages and the developer to receive both revenue and feedback.

However, while many assumed that PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions of Tokyo Xtreme Racer would be guaranteed, the people behind the project continually refuse to be drawn on the possibility – Traxion has asked, but so far not received a response.

A recent developer Ask Me Anything on Reddit failed to shed any light, either.

Whenever the topic of console versions was broached, the answer was simply: “the console version is TBD,” from the official Genki translator and representative.

Instead of confirming that ports are in development already or, like JDM: Japanese Drift Master, that they will arrive once the PC version is complete, the answer of ‘to be determined’ could be concerning.

It implies that a decision has not been made for the Unreal Engine 5-powered comeback to make its way to PlayStation platforms, a console seen (alongside Dreamcast, R.I.P.) as its spiritual home.

All is not quite lost, however, as when the game first launched earlier this year, Genki chose to use the phrase “PC first”, the latter word there hinting at something to follow. Let’s hope so, as that’s the only word the console-owning fanbase has to cling on to presently.
