Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown’s offline mode will come “likely at the end of the game’s life”

An offline mode remains one of Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown’s most highly requested features.

Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown offline mode will come “likely at the end of the game’s life”

One of the main sources of contention with Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown is its online connection requirement. Although the Season 3 update introduced a solo mode that allows players to race against AI opponents only without mixing online players, the game still requires an online connection to play.

As a result, players who pre-ordered the game were unable to get past the main menu when the servers struggled during Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown’s launch window. Frustratingly, the game also disconnects mid-race if the servers go offline.

Since Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown’s tumultuous launch, players have continually requested an offline mode. It’s a hot topic amid concerns about game preservation after The Crew’s servers were shut down, rendering the game unplayable.

With the Stop Killing Games campaign gaining momentum, Ubisoft has committed to making The Crew 2 and The Crew Motorfest playable offline in future patches when the servers are eventually shut down.

An offline mode is “not something we can work on yet” for Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown

KT Racing has previously been reluctant to make the game playable offline, fearing it would detract from the game’s online multiplayer and social focus. “You would change the experience offline. All of the game is designed to be online,” Game Director Guillaume Guinet told Traxion last year.

During a media briefing attended by Traxion, Nacon’s Racing Content Manager Alexander Arthur confirmed that KT Racing is considering adding an offline mode – but not in the immediate future.

“Offline mode is a big one,” said Arthur. “It’s something we’re looking to do – not immediately, but more likely at the end of the game’s life.”

“In order to create an offline mode for this game, we have to devote a lot of developer resources to it. Unfortunately, to create that feature for TDU, it’s not something we can work on yet.”

For now, the French studio is focusing on Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown’s Year 2 updates, with four seasons planned from October 2025 to July 2026. These seasons will reintroduce lifestyle features absent in Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown, including driving missions and the long-awaited return of houses and real estate, along with new car brands and a graphics update.

Last year, KT Racing revealed to Traxion that KT Racing is “already working” on a “solution” for the game’s end-of-life support.  “We don’t want people to buy the game and [then we] quit and it’s over for them,” said Guinet.

“We don’t expect to shut down the service for now. But we are already working on it.”
