Sonic Racing CrossWorlds Switch 2 Edition gets December release date
  • Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds releases on Nintendo Switch 2 on 4th December
  • Upgrade Pack lets Switch owners upgrade to the Switch 2 version for £10 / $10, with a £5 / $5 launch week discount
  • Switch 2 version will run at 1440p/60fps in docked mode

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds launched in September on PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch. It was even released on the last-generation PS4 and Xbox One platforms, but the native Switch 2 version was delayed until later this year.

Now, Sega has announced that Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will release digitally on Switch 2 on 4th December, priced at £64.99 / $69.99. A physical release is set to arrive in early 2026 and will feature the full game on a 64GB cartridge rather than a key card, though a release date is still to be confirmed.

Those who already own the original Switch version can upgrade to the Switch 2 version for £10 / $10, with save progress from the Switch version carrying over.

However, the upgrade pack will be discounted to £5.00 / $5.00 for the first week from 1am GMT / 5pm PT / 8pm ET on 4th December 4 until 1am GMT / 5pm PT / 8pm ET on 11th December.

Unlike the original release, there won’t be a Digital Deluxe edition for the Switch 2 game. To access the extra character DLC, players who don’t own Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds on Switch 1 or Switch 2 will need to buy the original Switch game and Switch 2 Upgrade Pack.

Those who own the Switch 2 version can still access the extra content by purchasing the Season Pass for Nintendo Switch.

Sonic Racing CrossWorlds Switch 2 Edition resolution and performance confirmed

Speaking to Traxion at Gamescom, Sonic series producer Takashi Iizuka revealed that Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will utilise the “full capability of Switch 2.” As such, the Switch 2 version will boast a higher resolution, sharper graphics and a faster frame rate.

“When you look at the content that will be provided, there’s no difference between the Switch 1 and Switch 2 games,” he said, but added “it won’t be a 100% replica because of the differences in the hardware specs.”

According to an online FAQ, the Switch 2 version of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will run at 1440p resolution and 60fps in docked mode, and 1080p/60fps in handheld mode. In four-player split screen, this will be reduced to 1440p/30fps in docked mode and 1080p/30fps in handheld mode.

  • Docked mode, single and two-player split-screen: 2560×1440@60fps
  • Docked mode, four-player split-screen: 2560×1440@30fps
  • Handheld mode, single and two-player split-screen: 1920×1080@60fps
  • Handheld mode, four-player split-screen: 1920×1080@30fps

The higher resolution and frame rate will be a welcome upgrade over the Switch version, which is capped at around 30fps and has downgraded visuals.

Since it launched in September, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds has sold over one million copies. On Switch 2, it will go head-to-head with Mario Kart World, which has sold a whopping 9.57 million copies since launching in June.
