Yet another accessible racing game is on the way in 2025, and now at last, Sonic Racing; CrossWorlds has a definitive release date – 25th September.
First unveiled at last year’s The Game Awards, further information was announced at Geoff Keighley’s other live event, the Summer Game Fest.
This particular ‘kart racer’, seen by many as a rival to Mario Kart Worlds, will allow you to switch environments (or ‘worlds’) mid-race – an automotive equivalent to Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. This is called ‘warping’ and it happens through ‘travel rings’.
It’s all set in bright, colourful environments, with renowned Sega characters from the Japanese company’s back catalogue. There’s even a callback to an older Sonic racing title, Sonic Riders, using the hoverboards, aka ‘Extreme Gear’.

Hatsune Miku, Yakuza’s Ichiban Kasuga and Persona’s Joker were announced as playable characters, alongside a Minecraft-themed level, kart and character. This is only part of a DLC Season Pass. Meanwhile, Sonic Prime Netflix show characters come with the Digital Deluxe Edition, which also includes the Season Pass.
This version also includes three days of early access, from the 22nd September

“Unlike another kart racing game, this game will have online cross-platform matchmaking,” said Sega’s Takashi Iizuka of the game created by both the Sonic Team and Sega Arcade Team.
That’s a significant undertaking, with CrossWorlds set to release for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. A Nintendo Switch 2 version has now also been added to that roster.
