RaceRoom’s licenced drifting content slated for 2025 release

Development on the drift-specific handling has been several years in the making, but a release is just around the corner.

RaceRoom’s licenced drifting content slated for 2025 release

PC driving simulation RaceRoom Racing Experience is perhaps best known for its diverse slate of interesting cars and tracks for the motorsport cognoscenti.

That is set to continue next year, with a suite of drifting content. With an early build at the ADAC SimRacing Expo, Traxion can safely say it is as serious as sim drifting can get.

RaceRoom employee Chris Horeweg makes it look easy. Dancing a modified BMW M3 (E30) from one set of cones to the next. The drifting equivalent of Swan Lake, his reverse-entry slide between two containers is balletic.

Then it was my turn and holy moly, I was just spinning around enough to make Kylie Minogue lose her balance.

This is difficult. This is a true drifting simulation, and I was failing to find a rhythm, spoiled by titles such as CarX that flatter the unskilled.

Thankfully, my Traxion colleague John Munro was on hand, and after a period of adjustment, he was able to slew the boxy Beemer with aplomb.

RaceRoom drifting arena

We were testing it in a new fictional drifting area, that even includes a gap jump. Come release, the development team is expecting two real-world licenced locations to sit alongside.

Our trusty E30 will also be joined by the current-generation BMW M4, currently used by the Red Bull Driftbrothers – incidentally, the duo has been working with RaceRoom on the drift driving experience.

The aim is for these drift areas to be playable not just solo, like we did, but online too – lobbies filled with other drifters, like an impromptu burnout meeting. We can envisage the TikTok clips of tandem slides now…

RaceRoom is even considering competitions with live judging, although that’s very definitely for another time.

For now, the early build requires mastery of genuine drifting techniques. Matched to licenced content and input from real-world experts, everything is here to form the basis of the next popular drifting community simulation.
