Need for Speed Unbound is free to play on PlayStation Plus in January

PlayStation Plus Essential subscribers can download Need for Speed Unbound on PS5 at no extra cost from 6th January until 2nd February, as part of the Monthly Games line-up alongside Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed and Core Keeper.

Once added to the game library, Need for Speed Unbound can be redownloaded at any time with a PlayStation Plus subscription.

PlayStation Plus is available in three tiers, with the cheapest, Essential, costing £6.99 / $9.99 per month or £59.99 / $79.99 per year.

Originally released in 2022, Need for Speed Unbound is an open-world street racer featuring extensive car customisation, cop chases and a unique art style incorporating cel-shaded elements.

It’s unclear whether the PlayStation Plus Monthly Game will be the Ultimate Collection version of Unbound, which features all post-release content.

These include nine Volume updates, the most recent of which added a Lockdown multiplayer mode inspired by the fabled 2005 Most Wanted game and, for the first time in Need for Speed, a playable motorcycle.

With Criterion supporting Battlefield 6’s development, Need for Speed is currently on hiatus. While it’s not known if a new entry is in development, EA says the street racing series will return in “new and interesting ways” at some point.

Other ex-Criterion staff are also working on Star Wars: Galactic Racer, a futuristic racer set in the Star Wars universe, set to release in 2026, among many other racing games, at the newly formed Fuse Games studio.
