Nintendo’s financial results for its first quarter of FY26 are in, running between April and June 2025, and they are staggering.
Among the notes that the Switch 2 console sold 3.5 million units in just four days – a new record for a gaming console – are the sales for its tentpole racing game, Mario Kart World.

The follow-up to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has managed to sell 5.63 million units – and that’s just in June 2025 alone, following its 5th June release. Sales in July will not be published until the Japanese gaming giant’s next financial report, expected late September/early October.
During the same period, total Switch 2 device sales were 5.82 million units, which means that only 3.26% of Switch 2 owners do not own Mario Kart World – the title was available solo or as part of a console launch bundle.
It is the first game in the long-running racing series to feature free-roam elements, and has 24-player online multiplayer alongside the single-player campaign.

For comparison, the karting game’s predecessor for the first Switch sold approximately 3.54 million copies in its first month on sale.
Nintendo is known for its internal game studios, creating beloved franchises optimised for its own hardware, and if these Mario Kart World sales are anything to go by, it’s a strategy that pays off – at odds with Microsoft’s recent approach, as it pivots to selling its IP on PlayStation 5.
