From the sublime to the ridiculous, Gran Turismo’s vehicle diversity has always been its strong suit.
Think multiplayer races with a field of tuned Toyota Alphards or the newly-created modified Suzuki Jimny fanclub – when these cars are announced in an update trailer, there’s a collective groan from racing car fans. But, a core Gran Turismo 7 community will tune them up, add wings, custom liveries and even engine swaps, and therein lies the fun.
With that in mind, the next game additions are set to polarise opinion once again…
Raised pick-up – Mercedes-Benz Unimog?

It’s a tricky one, but the car placed at the rear of Kazunori Yamauchi’ is certainly high-riding, off-road-oriented and has a pick-up-style bed.
That spells out Unimog to us, although it could be something like one of those modified Japanese kei car trucks but zoomed in.
There are approximately one billion derivations from the original Unimog design in 1948 – but all are focused on serious off-road capabilities and used by the likes of fire services and construction firms.
So, the big question is – can you stick an egregious wing on the back?

Peugeot 205 GTI
For decades, automotive journalists of a certain age can’t help but talk about cocking an inside wheel, lift-off oversteer and panache when it comes to the Puegeot 205 GTI.
For some, this is peak hot hatch, thanks to its disregard for safety (your knees are the crumple zone) it’s incredibly light. The French chassis engineers were on form too.

Which model here is hard to tell – in time there were both 1.6-litre or 1.9-litre engines available, and owners club members argue to this day as to which is better.
The only potential hang-up here is that Gran Turismo 7’s physics for front-wheel-drive cars can’t necessarily replicate the lively rear end that European hatchbacks of this era were famed for.
BMW Z4, first generation
This is a first-generation Z4 (the roadster preceding this was labelled ‘Z3’) with the controversial ‘flame surfacing’ of the Chris Bangle era of BMW design.
This highlights just how subjective design is – I happen to love the sharp creases down the E85’s flanks, which represent a giant ‘Z’ in the metalwork. It’s aged beautifully.

Also, ‘flame surfacing’ was tarnished at the time, when people conflated this car’s particular style with other Beemers at the time – but it was only ever on this Z4.
Anyway, enough of the styling. This is a rear-wheel drive sports car that could be purchased with 2.5-litre or 3-litre straight six engines (plus some lowly four-cylinders). This could also be the much-sought-after M Roadster with a 3.2-litre engine.
