Sony’s PlayStation 5 Pro console launches today (7th November). Over 50 games are enhanced for PS5 Pro on launch day, offering improved visual fidelity and performance.
However, Gran Turismo 7 is conspicuously absent from Sony’s list of PS5 Pro enhanced games, despite prominently featuring in the console’s unveiling video.
While Gran Turismo 7’s PS5 Pro enhanced update isn’t ready for launch, Digital Foundry has discovered it still takes advantage of the upgraded console even without a patch.
Using the PS5 Pro’s Game Boost feature, Digital Foundry found that Gran Turismo 7 will run at a native 4K resolution and “completely locked” 120fps on PS5 Pro when played in 120Hz mode with variable refresh rate (VRR) enabled.
Not only that, but replays will also run at 120fps. While there are some “tiny blips,” Digital Foundry’s John Linneman was impressed with the results, saying that he has “never seen replays this smooth in GT before.”
Gran Turismo 7 can also be played at 120fps on the standard PS5, but not at 4K. According to Digital Foundry via Eurogamer, the 120Hz resolution and frame rate modes deliver a near-locked 120fps, while hitting 1440p and 1260p, respectively.
However, enabling VRR increases the resolution to 1440p in frame rate mode and 4K in resolution mode. This comes at a performance cost though, with the frame rate dipping to 80-100fps in resolution mode.
This is no longer an issue on PS5 Pro, though Linneman warns that these options may be removed when Gran Turismo 7’s PS5 Pro patch arrives.
When it arrives, Gran Turismo 7’s PS5 Pro patch will enable ray-traced reflections on cars during races for the first time at 60fps and add an 8K resolution mode.
A release date for the patch has yet to be announced, with Polyphony targeting a November release. Unlike Gran Turismo 7, F1 24, The Crew Motorfest and Test Drive Unlimited: Solar Crown will receive PS5 Pro enhancements at launch.
