The 2023/24 F1 Sim Racing champion fought back at the fifth round of the current season, as Frederik Rasmussen won a tense battle against the combined might of the Mercedes-AMG Team.

The Oracle Red Bull Sim Racing driver secured pole position, but it was not a straightforward victory, opting for an alternative tyre strategy to those around him on the grid.

The Dane started on mediums, whereas the likes of second-placed Daniel Bereznay and McLaren’s Lucas Blakeley opted to start on soft compound rubber.

Those two flew by to be in first and second places on the opening lap, followed by Bereznay’s Mercedes team-mate Jake Benham a lap later.

In the early stages, the top three ran together as a pack, with Blakeley taking the lead – but the driver in papaya would ultimately drop back as the strategies played out.

Bereznay stayed out when most other soft users pitted, even lettering Rasmussen back ahead and into the lead. This strategy ultimately paid dividends, as towards the end of the race, the Hungarian had fresher tyres than most.

The ultimate race winner would visit pitlane for a set of red-walled tyres at the end of the 13th lap and set about catching those ahead who had undercut him, but with now on the slower mediums.

With nine laps remaining, Benham led, with Longuet and Bereznay close behind.

Lap 19 and reigning champion went side-by-side with Bereznay through the opening sector, the AMG holding off until they reached Vale when the Red Bull went around the outside. It took until the 22nd lap for the blue and yellow car to make it by Longuet for second, with the AMG following through.

With four laps remaining, it was seemingly Benham vs Rasmussen for the win. The Mercedes held on until the next lap, but the tyre advantage of Rasmussen helped him queue up a slipstream down the Hangar Straight to take the lead.

He would hold on to the flag, just, with Benham dropping behind team-mate Bereznay near the end to complete the podium.
