Euro Truck Simulator 2 and American Truck Simulator’s upcoming v1.58 updates are already set to feature a new double trailer module for their respective Driving Academy modes, but developer SCS Software has also set out much more wide-ranging features coming to the sims in the near future.

In preparation for the release of ETS 2’s Coaches and ATS’s Road Trip modes, the Czech studio is working on an overhaul of each game’s vehicle physics and road collision model.

SCS’s throttle model will be completely overhauled for v1.58, and its vehicles will feature a proper throttle torque engine map, so players will have to build up revs to overcome inertia from a standstill, bringing the new hill start assistant into play. Revised turbocharger sounds will also add to the immersiveness.

Keyboard players will be able to double-tap the throttle key to produce full power, or press and hold to apply half power – ideal for coasting. Speaking of which, the new throttle model should make cruising highways a more realistic experience, according to SCS, with camber and caster better simulated within vehicle suspension.

This should help provide a more convincing off-roading experience on the upcoming Ford F-150 and Bronco Road Trip mode cars.

An updated road collision model is also set to improve the smoothness of road curvature in-game, culminating in more ‘believable’ vehicle behaviour.

New content

The physics changes will account for the disparate requirements of new content, from powerful short wheelbase cars like the classic Ford Mustang, to more lumbering and lengthy coaches, like the Scania Touring, as both games also prepare to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S this year.

A release date for the v1.58 update has yet to be announced, but it s unveiling will follow a limited open beta period.
