Belgian footballer Thibaut Courtois’ esports team were led to victory by David Sobreiro, who won all three races he competed in.

The most innovative event in sim racing, the VCO Esports Racing League came to a conclusion for its 2026 season this weekend, with yet another all-new format. Using the young simulator The Last Garage, the last round was held at a fictional Californian circuit which had four lanes, akin to a Scalextric track or an expanded Race of Champions.

Each of the four final teams, TC Esports, Team Vitality, Visceral Esports and Williams Sim Racing fielded one driver in each race, which was four laps, equalling roughly the same distance for each competitor.

They would be chasing Finalist Mode, used first in ESL and Rennsport R1, at which point the team’s next win would clinch them the title.

The day started with one of the pitfalls that would become familiar, Dominik Blajer making a small mistake that meant he’d finish fourth, and Marcell Csincsik’s clean and fast race gave Vitality the first win. TC Esports would win the next two races, though, with Coque Lopez and David Sobreiro taking control of the event.

Visceral would have their best race of the day thus far in race four, but Csincsik would just pull away again on the last lap, and Blajer made a surprising resurgence to even beat them to second. Vitality and TCE would go closest in race five, with Jiri Toman neck and neck with Sobreiro, who just about edged out his rival, confirming TCE in Finalist Mode by the end of race six.

Vitality needed to finish third or better to join them for the next one, but Thibaut Cazaubon, perhaps inexplicably casual given the situation, managed to finish last and Vitality would miss out on the chance to be in Finalist Mode as well. Going into race seven, Csincsik’s main job was to prevent TCE from winning by winning himself, which looked like it was on the cards when Sobreiro went wide on lap two.

Kristof Kerekes, who needed to win to get Visceral into Finalist Mode, also made an error, and so the stage was clear for Csincsik to win. And yet, Sobreiro showed his best speed of the day, and showed why he was the best overall on the day, by coming back in just two laps to pip Vitality at the line, and take a dramatic ERL title.

It was as unexpected as it was brilliant. Sobreiro took to the unusual format like a duck to water, and his three wins, along with their timing, were crucial.

Additionally, it’s easy to forget that they barely made it into the Final Four, only just holding onto fourth by four points ahead of BS+ Competition on Raceroom, the last regular season round. It was another entertaining new format that VCO ERL has given us, and in 2026, undoubtedly deserving winners too.
