Underground Garage is the latest vehicle-themed title from Polish studio BeardedBrothers.Games, with an interesting twist.
On the surface, it appears to be a Need For Speed-style drifty romp through an as-yet-unnamed city’s streets, with a Fast & Furious-style plot to hold players’ interest (‘You don’t need plot when you got family,’ I hear you cry).
However, behind all that burnt rubber bluster is a Car Mechanic Simulator clone where you’re encouraged to fettle your chosen (and unlicensed) JDM steed, replacing parts and setting them up just so.
Underground Garage allows you to scour scrapyards for parts and cars before assembling your Shelley-esque creation back in your home garage (which sadly isn’t underground, despite the game’s title).
After that, the finished creation can be customised and re-painted before being driven enthusiastically on the streets.
At the moment, racing against AI cars isn’t possible but will arrive in a future update. The in-game environment looks capacious but NPCs do at least roam the streets, and the developer promises the ability to customise players’ avatars in future and will also implement a multiplayer mode.
Perhaps most intriguingly of all, the studio aims to introduce procedurally generated quests, which could well be a game-changer if done correctly.
Underground Garage is available for PC now via Steam Early Access for a discounted £16.79 / $19.99 until the 21st of November, with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions also in the works.
