It has been nearly nine months since its release and seven months since the opening round of the WRC – but finally, new content is on the way for EA SPORTS WRC.
In December the stages representing the Central European Rally were added as a free update – clearly post-release content, but this was telegraphed pre-launch. What we didn’t know is if any further cars or stages would be in development beyond the initial roadmap, which was completed when (beta) virtual reality support was added in April.
Now, though, Electronic Arts has confirmed that a 2024-season update plus two downloadable content packs will arrive for the game, straddling this year and 2025.
The news also affirms EA SPORTS WRC as a live-service platform, with no ‘EA SPORTS WRC 24’ game expected this year. Instead, there will be a re-release, the ‘EA SPORTS WRC 2024 Season Edition’ bundling the base game and an anticipated expansion.
WRC 2024 Expansion
Currently, official driver and co-driver line-ups plus matching liveries for the actual 2024 WRC season are absent. This is despite the current Toyota GR Yaris Rally1 being present within EA’s mobile game Real Racing 3.
This will change in October when these updated rosters are expected as part of an expansion.
The exact contents are not yet known, other than it will include “new locations, new cars and new cosmetics,” according to the publisher.
Rally Poland and Rally Latvia are new additions to this year’s real-world calendar, alongside (in WRC2) the new Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 car. All three items are currently absent in the game.
Pricing has also not yet been discussed, but those who purchase the expansion will also receive two upcoming DLC packs for no further charge.
Two DLC packs
Details are even thinner on the ground here, with new cars, stages and moments challenges making up two DLC packs. The first will be released in winter 2024/25, and the second in spring 2025.
As these are not season-specific updates, it is much harder to predict what could be included. EA SPORTS WRC has a strong roster of historical content, with additional content in this realm welcome.
Additionally, Season 6 of the Rally Pass system will launch on 30th July, and an esports series that utilises an in-game qualifying system before an in-person final is expected ‘soon’.
