Crazy Taxi to be delisted from digital stores in December

Sega is delisting over 60 classic games from digital stores next month, including Crazy Taxi.

In an FAQ, Sega announced that select classic games, along with the Sega Mega Drive and Genesis Classics and Dreamcast Classics bundles, will be delisted from digital stores from 6th December at 11:59 PST.

From this date, these games and bundles will no longer be purchasable but will still be available in your library if you already own them. Select titles will remain playable for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers.

Crazy Taxi is the only affected driving game, which will be delisted from Steam and the Xbox Store.

First hitting arcades in 1999, Crazy Taxi was one of the first open-world driving games, where you play as a reckless taxi driver speeding around a San Francisco-inspired city, delivering passengers to their destinations as fast as possible, earning extra points for performing stunts.

Following the arcade release, Crazy Taxi was ported to various systems such as the Dreamcast and PlayStation 2, and spawned several sequels. The versions being delisted next month are based on the 2011 Steam and 2010 Xbox 360 ports, which were criticised for cutting songs from the original soundtrack from artists like The Offspring and Bad Religion that are synonymous with the original arcade game.

Sega hasn’t said why it is delisting its Classics collection games, with fans speculating if a new classics compilation will be released to replace them.

Crazy Taxi reboot in development

While the original game will no longer be playable on PC and Xbox, Crazy Taxi is set to make a surprise comeback. During The Game Awards 2023, Sega announced new reboots of some of its most fabled franchises, including Crazy Taxi, Streets of Rage, Shinobi, Golden Axe and Jet Set Radio.

According to Sega, the Crazy Taxi reboot will be a “large-scale, open-world, massively multiplayer driving game.” Like the original, the urban setting will be inspired by the US West Coast around a “theme park-like” map, but little else is known.

There appears to be a new police chase mode, with cop cars cars seen chasing the speeding taxis through the city streets in the announcement trailer. Axel and Gena’s classic cabs from the original game are also seen alongside new car types inspired by modern supercars.

There is no release date for the Crazy Taxi reboot yet.
