Assetto Corsa Rally to support VR, but after initial early access release

Caught up in the melee that was the Assetto Corsa Rally announcement at the SimRacing Expo, you may have missed virtual reality support confirmation.

Assetto Corsa Rally to support VR, but after initial early access release

Naturally, with virtual reality support a fundamental feature of the original Assetto Corsa title and available from the very first early access release of Assetto Corsa EVO, you would be forgiven for thinking that Assetto Corsa Rally will also feature VR from the off.

However, when the early access version is released on PC on 13th November, headset support will be omitted.

One of the key differences between EVO and Rally, alongside the fact that they are completely different games by different studios, is the graphics engine in use. Rally will use a customised Unreal Engine 5 system – Assetto Corsa Competizione used Unreal Engine 4 – whereas EVO is a completely proprietary graphics setup.

VR support will be on the way for the stage-based game, but exactly when and in what state are still to be confirmed.

“We will not support VR on day one with the early access on 13th November because we are still working on that,” explains Assetto Corsa Rally’s Game Director Irvin Zonca to Traxion.

“We were not satisfied with the current results we are getting with VR, and since we know that it’s super important for our audience – and honestly, we like VR as well because it’s immersive – we will be focusing on improving it.”

That’s not to say it won’t be implemented, far from it, and Zonca tantalisingly teases ‘soon’.

“As soon as we feel like we have a first version of VR that we feel like we want to release, we will do that. Expect it to come soon during the Early Access phase, but we still need to work a little bit on that.”

VR has been notoriously tricky to implement when paired with Unreal for driving games – EA SPORTS WRC’s and Rennsport’s challenges with the feature are testament to this – but Rally does use a heavily customised version of Epic’s technology, so we’ll hopefully test it in three dimensions sooner rather than later.
