Inspired by late eighties arcade racing games like Pole Position and OutRun, Spanish developer Ivanovich Games has come up with the imaginatively titled passion project inRun, making it VR-compatible in the process.
The Barcelona-based team has focused its efforts on making the VR experience free from motion sickness, employing special camera techniques to keep players’ attention fixed on the game.
Uniquely, the Meta Quest and Steam game is compatible with steering wheel peripherals and motion rigs, meaning players can achieve the full gamut of sensations in what is essentially a throwback to the golden age of coin-operated racing games.
The game’s aesthetic is surprisingly futuristic, featuring lots of neon colours and over-the-top stages, but the gameplay is pure OutRun: dodging traffic, high-speed driving and competing against equally quick opponents in recognisable – yet unlicensed – cars.
There’s even a storyline, albeit a flimsy one, where you race to earn the respect of your partner’s father by beating his race records. It’s a story as old as time…
InRun will enter Meta Quest and Steam Early Access on the 18th of July, with a demo available exclusively to play on Steam this weekend only.
