The Alfa Romeo F1 Team Kick Esports squad has announced a partnership with Romain Grosjean’s R8G eSports squad ahead of the 2023 F1 Esports Series Pro championship.
Alfa Romeo’s F1 Esports squad was previously operated in association with Veloce Esports but the move to R8G comes as the French team finds itself in a rich vein of form thanks to claiming the ESL R1 Drivers title (Marcell Csincsik) and the GTE win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans Virtual.
Last season’s Alfa Romeo lineup of Tomek Poradzisz, Nico Longuet and Dani Bereznay secured fifth position in the Constructors Standings, with Longuet clinching sixth overall in the Drivers Championship.
This season, which will take place using EA Sports F1 23 game, Alfa hopes to take a step forward and battle for the F1 Esports title, taking on 2022 winners McLaren. It hopes to do this with an entirely new driver lineup.
The team’s 2023 roster includes 20-year-old Dutchman Matthijs van Erven, two-time F1 Esports Series Pro champion Brendon Leigh and last season’s third-place finisher and multiple winner Thomas Ronhaar, emphasising the team’s lofty ambitions.
“In the three years since I created my esports team, everything has been geared towards detecting young talent and winning titles,” commented Grosjean.
“We have emerged from zero in just three years, to become one of the best structures in the world. It is obviously an honour to work with Sauber Esports and Alfa Romeo F1 Team KICK Esports to play a leading role in F1 Esports. Our experiences in both the real and virtual world will help us to take the final step,” he concludes.
