Confirmed in an exposé piece posted by iRacing on Thursday (30th June) regarding the process of their involvement with the real-world Atlanta Motor Speedway reconfiguration, it was revealed that tomorrow’s 2022 iRacing Season 3 Patch 2 will include the updated version of the Atlanta venue.
Remodeled at the end of the 2021 season in time for a 2022 real-world debut, Atlanta Motor Speedway’s overhaul couldn’t have been originally completed in time without the help of the team at iRacing.com. iRacing’s Greg Hill teased the track earlier in the week, and now we know for sure that we’ll have it soon.
While the track that will exist tomorrow is laser scanned, before ground broke on the new layout, iRacing had recreated a virtual mock-up to what the course might look like, even testing it out briefly with Coca-Cola iRacing Series and NASCAR Cup Series competitors from time to time.
Featuring superspeedway-esque racing now as the corners have been raised from 24 to 28 inches of banking, the first NASCAR Cup Series race came down to the wire as William Byron from Hendrick Motorsports took the checkered flag on that day.
Next weekend (10th July 2022), the series will return for their second trip to the new track. Thankfully, iRacers can also race on the new track starting tomorrow.
I would expect the oval to definitely be there in the release, but after that, other track variations (such as the legends oval, infield road course, a possible rallycross course) are still unknown at this time.
It’s not said what else the 2022 iRacing Season 3 Patch 2 will include, nor does the article mention its pricing or the fate of the previous version of the track.
I’ve got my fingers crossed that at the minimum, the old track is saved as a legacy version so that iRacing members can still get to drive on the old, worn out surface that was famous for some of the best traditional 1.5-mile racing on the service.
