The second TOYOTA GAZOO Racing GT Cup within a Gran Turismo game will be returning later this year – and it will include the Toyota GR010 Hybrid Le Mans Hypercar.
In its debut season last year, it took Toyota Gazoo Racing to the World Endurance Championship Manufacturers’ and Teams’ championships and Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and José María López to the Drivers’ drown, plus the 24 Hours of Le Mans title.
This is confirmed for Gran Turismo 7 as it’s on the schedule for the 2022 TOYOTA GAZOO Racing GT Cup, a racing esports competition that will take place using the game’s Sport Mode infrastructure.
Also on the schedule is a selection of existing Toyota cars from the game and the addition of Subaru…
New Subaru BRZ too?
This is pertinent because the competition states for the fifth round ‘GR86/ Subaru BRZ’. The key here is for the real world, the new GR86 and BRZ are essentially the same car save for a few subtle differences.
In Gran Turismo 7 at present, there are two BRZs from 2015 and 2018, but not the current version to match the 2021 GR86.
Thus, it would be slightly odd if the race was the new GR86 vs an older BRZ, making for some Balance of Performance tweaks.
The new BRZ then. We think it’s to be expected soon then, although not confirmed.
2022 TOYOTA GAZOO Racing GT Cup format
Following a win for Tomoaki Yamanaka last year, the Toyota-affiliated series returns for this year and will be open to everyone with Gran Turismo 7 in-game.
There will be seven rounds on set dates, and during these dates you can enter, selecting from a range of timings available and placed into splits based upon your Driver and Safety rating.
Cars in use include the aforementioned GR86 and GR010 Hybrid Le Mans Hypercar plus the classic Toyota Supra GT500 ’97 (Castrol TOM’S), the Super Formula single-seater, the GR Supra and finishing with the GR Yaris.
The final will be in November 2022 at an as-yet-unspecified date and location.
The first qualifying round is on 15th May, stretching to Round 7 on 28th August and can be played on PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5.
