2025 British F4 Esports Championship Round 7: Gilbert in the driving seat

The seventh round of the British F4 Esports Championship saw Team Benik’s Remy Gilbert extend his lead at the top of the standings to teammate Henry Moore.

Round 6 of the British F4 Esports Championship saw Remy Gilbert assume control of the title race, as he followed up his second win of the season with a battling second-place finish, just ahead of his teammate, Henry Moore.

Former championship leader Matt Caruana endured a trickier time of it at Knockhill, with a poor qualifying session putting him on the back foot immediately. The HYMO Setups by EMM driver then lost a Race 2 win after a steward’s decision, compounding his disappointment.

This, combined with an enforced absence in the final round of the season, means the drivers’ championship comes down to a straight fight between the Team Benik pair of Gilbert and Moore.

Round 7 at Zandvoort would feature another intriguing Team Benik intra-team battle, as the championship enters its final stages.

Race 1

Qualifying saw Gilbert and Moore go head-to-head again, with Gilbert edging his teammate by 0.077s to claim pole, and the pair made a clean getaway to head the field in the opening laps.

Williams Esports’ Beckham Jacir was applying pressure on Moore for second, however, resulting in an overly ambitious dive down the inside of Turn 1. Jacir lost control and nearly punted Moore off, but instead spun to the outside of the track, delaying the unfortunate Leo Brown.

This elevated HYMO’s William Chadwick and Caruana to third and fourth, respectively, although opportunities to overtake cleanly were proving few and far between around the Dutch venue.

The HYMO pair played an inspired team game, putting pressure on the Team Benik drivers ahead without holding each other up. Likewise, Gilbert and Moore were cooperating for the time being.

However, with two laps to go, the leading pair were given the green light to battle for the win, and this gave Chadwick a golden opportunity to get involved. In a thrilling conclusion to the race, Moore and Chadwick slipstreamed past Gilbert towards the finish line, the trio separated by just 0.027s. Caruana came home fourth, still less than 0.1s behind.

Race 2

Moore had eaten into Gilbert’s championship lead after his Race 1 victory, and the Race 2 reversed grid draw provided another opportunity. However, Moore started in 10th while Gilbert began in eighth.  Aston Martin’s Connor Muir would start from pole position, sitting alongside last season’s UK FF1600 Esports Cup runner-up, Shoma Shintani.

In typically aggressive style, Shintani snatched the lead into Turn 1, with BS+ Competition’s Will Murdoch claiming second on the run to Turn 9.

Moore and Gilbert made steady progress in the opening laps, but with the pack so condensed, the risks were high, especially with a championship up for grabs. By mid-distance, Moore was languishing down in 10th, while Gilbert had scythed through the field to sit third, giving chase to the leading duo of Shintani and Murdoch.

With Gilbert in no-man’s land – too far back to challenge for the win but under no threat from Muir in P4 – attention turned to how Moore would handle being embroiled in a six-car battle for fifth.

Despite an aggressive contretemps during the final laps, Moore couldn’t make headway and came home a disconsolate 10th, as Gilbert increased his championship lead to 19 points with third.

Up front, Shintani claimed his first British F4 Esports victory, easing ahead of Murdoch by just 0.058s at the chequered flag.

Crofton Woodhatch had put himself into title contention with a string of superb results in the UK FF1600 Esports Cup, and this continued in qualifying for Zandvoort, where the Brit claimed his sixth pole position from seven rounds.

Race 1

Woodhatch controlled the race for the first half of the opening lap until he was usurped around the outside of Scheivlak by Hayden Bramley. Woodhatch retaliated three laps in, with Bramley hip checked exiting Turn 1, dropping him to the back of the leading five-car group.

By the final lap, Woodhatch had been demoted from first, with Bramley claiming the lead. In the slipstreaming battle to the chequered flag, Bramley held on to win just ahead of Dylan McClements, with Jayden Sherwood taking third.

Woodhatch finished a disappointing fourth and was eager to make amends in the reversed grid race.

Race 2

The reversed grid draw saw Teemu Myllykangas start from pole, with Woodhatch a favourable sixth. His closest championship rivals, Sherwood and Bramley, would start from seventh and ninth, respectively.

Myllykangas held the lead in the early stages from Sam Sanders, but Woodhatch was already into third on lap two – an ominous sign for championship protagonists Sherwood and Bramley, who were still just sixth and eighth.

Once again, there was a five-car battle for the lead, with Woodhatch, Myllykangas, Sanders, McClements joined by Matt Kendall.

On the penultimate lap, Bramley dived down the inside of Myllykangas for the lead at the Hans Erst corner, forcing Woodhatch to check up behind. Unsighted, McClements ran into the back of the championship leader, spinning him out of contention.

The melee allowed Myllykangas and Bramley to break free, but Myllykangas had a big enough gap to hold on for the win, with McClements finishing third. Woodhatch, although still leading the championship by a good margin, would only finish 12th, with the destination of the 2025 UK FF1600 Esports Cup still to be decided.

The eighth and final round of the British F4 Esports Championship and UK FF1600 Esports Cup will take place on the 26th November at Brands Hatch’s Grand Prix circuit, with all the racing broadcast live on iRacing’s YouTube, Twitch and Facebook channels, produced by RaceSpot TV.

With the Teams’ championship already sewn up, either Remy Gilbert or Henry Moore will take the Drivers’ title and in what is likely to be a fascinating denouement to the series.
