In a unique move, Thrustmaster has created what is conceptually a miniature steering wheel for a hand-held gaming controller.

It already creates the ESWAP X PRO CONTROLLER for PC and Xbox, which is a modular gamepad allowing players to move analogue stick positions – plus size and height – alongside changing aesthetic appearance.

However, a new Forza Horizon 5 Edition has added the new Racing Wheel Module, which places a tiny wheel, where you’d normally expect an analogue stick or D-Pad for thumb use.

The ‘steering wheel’ allows for 95° of rotation and is covered in a non-slip coating. Its sensitivity is adjustable and it will re-centre of its own accord.

When in use, D-pad inputs are automatically mapped to four buttons on the rear of the device. The unit also comes bundled with a D-pad and two S5 NXG mini-sticks, so you can remove the wheel for when you’re not playing a driving title.

This has to be one of the most distinctive control layouts we’ve ever seen. While we doubt its ability to make you become the next sim racing esports champion, it could be a fun addition for those Forza Horizon players without the space for a full-size steering wheel.

Speaking of Horizon 5, as you can probably tell from the images, it is officially licenced for that title and includes a dashing red, black and white paint scheme to tie in with Microsoft’s open-world epic.

The Thrustmaster ESWAP XR PRO CONTROLLER FORZA HORIZON 5 EDITION will retail for $199.99. Pre-orders are live today, 1st March 2023, and they will ship in time for the upcoming Rally Adventure DLC on 29th March 2023.
