Nacon’s new 2027 WRC game to be titled: ‘WRC – The Official Game’
Behind-the-scenes look at PH Sport shows Lancia Ypsilon HF Integrale Rally2 being laser-scanned
Not only did Nacon Racing’s third ‘News From The Pits’ episode reveal a spate of new Revosim hardware and games news, but it also offered a sneak peek into the development of the French publisher’s latest World Rally Championship licence foray.
The firm’s next WRC game is due for release in 2027 and will be developed by the newly formed Grit Games using Unreal Engine 5.
Interestingly, the new game will simply be titled ‘WRC – The Official Game’, perhaps indicating a move away from yearly releases toward a more live-service offering, although this has not been confirmed.
Nacon, via developer Kylotonn/KT Racing, previously held the WRC licence between 2013 and 2022, with a new game released annually. Moving away from this model could help ease Grit into a ground-up developement of a new title, especially as parent company Nacon switches from the tried-and-tested KT Engine to UE 5.
The NFTP episode also took viewers behind the scenes at rally preparation specialist PH Sport, where multiple cars were apparently undergoing both audio and visual recording processes for WRC.
The most prominent vehicle was the 2026 Lancia Ypsilon HF Integrale Rally2, which the Grit team subjected to a thorough laser scan. Later, a Citroën C3 Rally2 appeared to be set up for audio recording, with a further video presentation on the game’s sound design expected in future.
The Lancia, which has become a fan favourite on the WRC stages this season, is set to compete in the 2027 championship as a Rally2 car, going up against WRC 27 and WRC Kit cars for overall wins (if the categories turn out to have parity, that is).
Laser-scanning in action
It’s expected that the game will feature all the front-running cars of the 2027 WRC as the series moves away from the expensive-but-spectacular Rally1 regulations.
Other cars to feature in the video include the Citroën DS3 WRC/R5, Citroën Saxo Super 1600, Citroën Saxo Kit Car, Peugeot 205 T16 Group B/Grand Raid, Peugeot 3008 DKR and Peugeot 208 Rally4, although whether they eventually appear in-game remains to be seen.
PH Sport is a long-time partner of Citroën’s rallying programmes, and has run cars for nine-time WRC champions Sébastien Loeb and Sébastien Ogier in the past, as well as Robert Kubica and Kimi Räikkönen-backed efforts.
