Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown is free to play on Xbox this weekend

Xbox players can try Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown for free this weekend as part of a limited trial.

Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown is free-to-play on Xbox this weekend

KT Racing’s troubled open-world racer Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown is getting a free trial on Xbox Series X|S consoles this weekend.

From today (24th January) until 27th January at 9am, those who haven’t tried KT Racing’s open-world racer can explore Hong Kong Island in a variety of exotic cars.

There’s no time limit either, with progress transferring to the full game if you decide to buy it. As an extra incentive, the Standard Edition will be 40 per cent off on Xbox during the trial period.

As well as Hong Kong Island, players can access the new cars and Ibiza map introduced in Season 2 last December. Returning from Test Drive Unlimited 2, KT Racing has recreated Eivissa, the capital of Ibiza, in 1:1 scale.

If you haven’t played Solar Crown yet, you’ll need to put some hours in, though as you must reach reputation level 12 and join the Sharps or Streets clan before you can visit Ibiza.

Released last September, Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown had a rocky launch, with server connection issues preventing early adopters from accessing the game due to an online connection requirement. In response, KT Racing offered free in-game rewards as compensation.

Player numbers have been frequently low since launch – encountering other players when cruising or waiting in race lobbies is alarmingly rare. Let’s hope these free trials (there was a similar free trial on PS5 last December) will help increase the player base.

Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown’s next ‘Clan War’ update was originally due to arrive in March, but has been cancelled in response to player feedback. Instead, KT Racing is focusing on adding new features that “speak to fans of the series” in Season 3, though a release date yet to be confirmed.
