Super Woden GP 3 was announced in April as a surprise new entry in the revered indie racing series. Unlike its isometric predecessor, the third entry takes the series in a new direction, switching to a 3D chase camera perspective.

Since the announcement, the Steam page is now live, revealing new gameplay details and screenshots.

For returning players, the third instalment will have a familiar setup. You start with a modest budget, before buying your first car, earning credits from races and expanding your garage.

Once again, the “massive” career mode is presented in a classic, Gran Turismo-esque world map scattered with dealerships, race events and workshops for tuning your cars.

Outside the single-player campaign, the Steam page reveals that Super Woden GP 3 will support local split-screen multiplayer for up to four players.

Indie developer ViJuDa promises a “huge variety of vehicles,” ranging from compacts to classic sports cars, GT cars and prototypes. Rally cars will also feature, with vehicles presumably carrying over from the Rally Edge spin-off.

There are no licensed vehicles, but they are heavily inspired by real-world models such as the Chevrolet Corvette, Dodge Charger Daytona, Ford Mustang Mazda 787b, Toyota GT-One, Volkswagen Beetle, among others shown in screenshots.

Each vehicle will also be fully customisable, with paint options and performance upgrades

As for locations, tracks range from cities and mountains to deserts, forests and snowy environments. Presented in a comic-book-inspired art style, circuits from previous games are set to return, including Denise Beach and Denise North.

Others will be inspired by real-world locations, including a Tsukuba-inspired location previewed in a recent gameplay video.

Wet weather is also confirmed in a gameplay video showing an Alfa Romeo 155 Touring Car parody racing around a cobblestone circuit.

Another gameplay video previews newly added time of day transitions.

Alongside the chase camera, Super Woden GP 3 will be playable in a bumper camera and a viewpoint further behind the car. However, the developer revealed to Traxion that the game is designed to be a “closer, more traditional chase cam experience.”

With the game at an early stage of development, a release date has yet to be announced. On Steam, however, the PC system requirements are now available, but console versions remain unconfirmed.

A console release seems likely, however, as the first two Super Woden games made their way to PlayStation, Xbox and Switch. Rally Edge is also expected to arrive on other platforms this summer following its Steam release earlier this year.

“Everything flows much better due to the experience gained from previous games,” ViJuDa told Traxion about developing Super Woden GP 3. “It’s shaping up to be something very close to the kind of racing game I’ve always wanted to make.”
