Pretend Cars Racing 2 has exited Steam Early Access today, with the full release boasting a comprehensive career mode, 37 tracks inspired by real-world venues and seven decade-spanning car classes.

Those of us of a certain age who remember classics like Super Cars II or Micro Machines will feel right at home with PCR 2, considering the obvious gameplay similarities, but the extra authenticity added by solo developer Patricio Marin is impressive.

PCR 2 features a day-to-night cycle, wet weather, multi-class racing (yes, there are WEC-style prototypes and GT3 cars), and lets players fully edit driver names and vehicles (‘Battery Voltas’ need not apply).

Perhaps the game’s most important feature is its track editor, with players able to share and download community creations via Steam Workshop support. Two-player local split-screen play is also possible, with players able to rope in friends thanks to Steam’s Let’s Play Together mechanic.

All in all, PCR 2 seems to be a thorough collection of the best bits of retro-themed top-down racing games, and it looks like a bargain too, given its £7.15 / $7.99 price tag on PC.
