iRacing has revealed that it will introduce Adaptive AI in its upcoming Season 2 2025 build this month.

Set for release on the 11th of March, Season 2 is set to add Portland International Raceway, multiple ARCA cars and a refresh of the ever-popular Legends Ford, alongside the first part of a substantial overhaul of the game’s GTP and LMP2 physics.

However, Adaptive AI, where your computer-controlled opponents adapt their speed to the player as the race unfolds, is perhaps the most important new feature.

How it works is quite simple: if a player wanted to compete in an offline race without any practice, the AI would start at a leisurely pace to match the inexperience of the player. As the player completes more laps, their pace naturally quickens, with iRacing’s Adaptive AI following suit.

Players can choose from four initial Adaptive AI skill levels; Easy, Medium, Hard and Extreme, which, in theory, allows players to fine-tune how competitive the AI will be relative to the player.

It is currently unknown whether the Adaptive AI simply learns via lap time progression or whether the system is more dynamic, but more details should be revealed with Season 2’s patch notes.

Adaptive AI has been successfully used by free-to-play sim RaceRoom for several years, while Sony’s Gran Turismo Sophy AI Agent has raised the bar in terms of realistic opponent behaviour in Gran Turismo 7,. It will therefore be interesting to see how iRacing’s new AI system stacks up in comparison.
