iRacing’s Fanatec GT Challenge stays in the states once again for 2021 Season 3 Week 10. Now down in North Carolina, what was originally a NASCAR oval has recently been transformed into half road course, half oval, ROVAL for short.
This week’s track guide from Dave Cam preaches that this track is tougher than it looks. It’s easy to overdrive the infield section and lose valuable time. With Dave’s slow, methodical approach, even though this is no place for hot laps, you may be finding more speed in driving easy.
The Charlotte Motor Speedway ROVAL takes 17 turns around the Speedway Motorsports Inc. property. All four NASCAR oval corners are in play, plus the infield, a bus stop, and a frontstretch chicane. The layout is 2.280-miles or 3.669-kilometers and was most recently reconfigured in 2019.
Getting around these chicanes, or “turtles” as the NASCAR folks like to call them, all take a slightly different approach. Some will upset the car while some will help settle it. Dave explains which ones to cut and which ones to avoid. He’s also got some pit stop knowledge, so be sure to watch until the end.
