Honda launches Gran Turismo 7 esports competition

Taking place as of today, 28th September, Honda Racing has begun the running of its first-ever official sim racing esports event within Gran Turismo 7.

Taking the form of two online leaderboard challenges, the Honda Racing eMS Gran Turismo Fastest Attack 2023 is open to anyone aged between 6-17 in the U17 class, or those 18 and over in the  Challenge Class.

All you need to enter is first up Gran Turismo 7 on PS4 or PS5, visit the Sport Mode Lap Time Challenge area and set a time in either of the Online Time Challenges.

Even if you aren’t particularly interested in esports competition, there are three in-game prize tiers with up to two million credits up for grabs simply by setting a representative time.

The older Challenge Class sees you at the Nürburgring Nordschleife, whereas the U17s are at Suzuka. In each instance, you’ll be behind the wheel of an FL5-generation Honda Civic Type R, which made its video game debut via the September Gran Turismo 7 update.

However, it’s been modified, with a tune, a roll cage and a livery design matching a car competing in the STQ class of the real-world Japanese Super Taikyu Series.

For the top 10 times set in the older category and living in Japan, there’s an in-person GT Grand Final race event at the Honda Welcome Plaza in Aoyama, Tokyo on 10th December 2023.

For anyone who manages to set a competitive time, a virtual email certificate will be sent by Sony later in the year. The aim is to beat the following markers, which the road-going FL5 Type R set as front-wheel drive production car records:

  • Suzuka Circuit – 2:23.120
  • Nürburgring Nordschleife – 7:44.881

Entries, and therefore the in-game time trials, end at 2:59 pm (UTC), 29th October 2023.
