In a move that will help promote female participation in esports competitions, this season the F1 Esports Series will include a direct route for women-only competitors.
While female virtual racers have always been able to enter F1 Esports competitions, so far, it’s been a male-dominated affair. Now, with the Women’s Wildcard, there will be a female-only qualification route into the Pro Exhibition.
Held on the 27th May 2021, the Pro Exhibition will see the 10 F1 Esports teams selecting their line-ups from a pool of sim racers. The racers, which will now include a male and female mix, will be put through a “gauntlet of in-game assessments” – according to the F1 Esports website – to showcase their talents in front of the F1 Esports Series teams and will be streamed live for all to see.
This is a move to show budding female entrants that competing at the highest levels of esports is possible, with the aim being to make the first female driver selected by an official F1 Esports team a possibility. If it goes according to plan, we think that this can only broaden the appeal of esports and encourage more people to participate.
To take part, register and opt-in via the Codemasters website and then set lap times within the F1 2020 video game on PC, PlayStation or Xbox between the 3rd and 9th May. Time to enable your game face!
