When Maverick Games first announced it was developing a new narrative-driven AAA racing game, now known as Clutch, it was originally going to be published by Amazon Game Studios. That deal ultimately fell through, with the developer announcing the two companies had parted ways in February.

Now, Maverick has partnered with a new publisher: Focus Entertainment. In terms of driving games, the French company is best known for publishing simulation titles such as SnowRunner, Expeditions: A MudRunner Game and, more recently, RoadCraft.

“We founded Maverick Games to build the open-world racing experience we’d dreamed about for years. Focus shares our creative bar and our ambition for Clutch, and we can’t wait for players everywhere to discover this world,” said Mike Brown, Founder & CEO of Maverick Games.

“At Focus, we look to partner with creators who are redefining their genre. Mike Brown and his team are regarded as ones of the defining creative voices in the racing genre, and CLUTCH embodies exactly the creative ambition Focus Entertainment wants to champion,” added Vincent Chataignier, Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Focus Entertainment.

Set Monaco and the French Riveria, the open-world racer sees you play as siblings Theo and Cass competing in the sanctioned RK1 tournament and underground street races as part of a storyline with cinematic set pieces. Seemingly inspired by The Fast and Furious, vehicles can be equipped with ‘Clutch Tech’ gadgets, with gameplay footage showing cars firing harpoons to swing around corners.

Developed by ex-Playground Games staff at Maverick Games, including Forza Horizon 5’s creative director Mike Brown, Clutch is set to release in spring 2027 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Before then, Gamescom visitors can try the open-world racer in a playable demo on the show floor. Hopefully, we’ll also see some new gameplay at tonight’s Gamescom Opening Night Live show after the reveal trailer premiered at Summer Game Fest.
