The relaxing nature of American Truck Simulator means many gamers find it the ideal way to unwind after a tough day at work.

However, developer SCS Software is set to take this further by introducing vehicles other than trucks to the game, making it far easier to explore the game’s enormous map.

In a ‘Dev Talk’ episode posted to its YouTube channel and a subsequent blog post, SCS discussed the new game mode and what it will mean for the future of ATS.

“In the past, we’ve shared our ambition to expand the ways players can engage with the game world,” stated SCS. “Road Trip represents a step in that direction. Once introduced, it should allow players to enjoy the vast landscapes of ATS not only from the cab of an 18-wheeler but also from behind the wheel of, say, a powerful pickup or even a sports car,” the statement continued.

‘Road Trip’ mode will allow players to explore the game’s environment using conventional cars and pickups, both of which were showcased in teaser images.

More details on whether the new mode will include different objectives and mechanics are yet to be revealed, but the move towards open-world exploration certainly should appeal to a large chunk of the sim racing community given the popularity of Assetto Corsa’s ‘cruise’ servers.
