Assetto Corsa EVO’s free roam set to arrive in early 2026

One of Asseto Corsa EVO’s most anticipated features is the free roam mode. In a first for the sim racing game, you’ll be able to venture outside the Nurburgring and explore the surrounding public roads in the Eifel region. This feature was slated to arrive in the summer before being pushed back.

During the SimRacing Expo 2025, Kunos Simulazioni co-founder Marco Massarutto provided an update, confirming that Assetto Corsa EVO’s free roam is now expected to arrive in early 2026 during the Early Access phase.

“We are working to make the first part of the free roam available early next year,” he confirmed, speaking at the SimRacing Expo. “I read somewhere months ago that the free roam would not arrive in EVO before the 1.0 version. But it will arrive during the Early Access programme.”

Assetto Corsa EVO’s free roam will let players experience the “pleasure of driving on beautiful roads.”

“Since we had to focus on the features and issues we had with the release of Early Access we had to focus on what was already released and available to the public because we want to guarantee the best possible quality,” he said when discussing the delay. “So we changed the roadmap to fit with the updated schedule.”  

Extensive footage shown at the SimRacing Expo shows vehicles cruising around a variety of roads, from scenic villages to forest roads. “You can go literally everywhere. You can go on road, off-road,” said Massarutto, explaining that the free roam will let players experience the “pleasure of of driving on beautiful roads.”

“The beauty of the free roam is that Assetto Corsa is a100% racing and driving simulation. For the very first time, you’ll be able to enjoy realistic physics on real roads.”

Assetto Corsa EVO’s roads will be faithfully reproduced, meaning they will be as narrow as they are in real life, with the correct layouts, bends and buildings. “We didn’t make them wider just to have a different kind of gameplay.”  

Roads showcased in the work-in-progress build were empty and devoid of traffic and pedestrians. However, Massarutto assures they will  be populated with traffic and NPCs to “make the place alive.” Kunos is also working on a navigation system that highlights points of interest.

Massarutto envisions players who have never visited the region using Assetto Cors EVO’s free roam environment like a virtual tour guide. “If you’ve never been there, you can use EVO as your Yellow Pages,” he said.

Two new Ferraris were also shown driving around Assetto Corsa EVO’s Eifel region: the SP1 single-seater speedster and Purosangue, with the SUV shown navigating an off-road trail before parking in a field to admire the scenic view.
