Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds announced at The Game Awards

Team Sonic Racing is getting a surprise sequel.

Sonic Racing CrossWorlds

Screamer wasn’t the only surprise new racing game announcement at The Game Awards. At the show, Sega announced Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds as the latest entry in the Sonic kart racing series, and it looks intriguing.

Featuring iconic Sonic characters, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds boasts a “distinct racing mechanic” that will “transport Sonic racing fans into a new dimension.” Little else is known about the new Sonic racer, but the brief CGI teaser trailer shows Shadow the Hedgehog driving through a portal. This suggests you will be able to warp into locations like in Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart.

Developed by Hardlight Studios, the Leamington Spa-based team behind the Apple Arcade version of Team Sonic Racing and Crazy Taxi City Rush, Sonic Racing: Crossroads is “coming soon” to all major platforms including PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. A release date has yet to be announced.

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is the fourth game in the Sonic Racing series starring the titular hedgehog, following Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing (2010), Sega All-Stars Racing Transformed (2012) and Team Sonic Racing (2019).

Sonic Racing games typically feature a unique gameplay gimmick. Transformed lets you switch vehicles between karts, boats and planes, whereas the last game focused on team-based racing. CrossWorlds looks to continue this trend with its apparent warping mechanic.
