As we reported on over the past week, the new configuration for Atlanta Motor Speedway is finally available on iRacing as of Friday morning (1st July 2022).
It was unknown how the track would come to the service exactly, whether it would be a new track to purchase, or if it would replace the existing version.
As it turns out, it was neither of those. If you already own Atlanta Motor Speedway, the default oval has been updated to the 2022 specifications. The model that was scanned and built in 2008 has been named as such, and is an option to choose on the dropdown menu when selecting a track.
Some of the other configurations, like the Road Course and Legends Oval, have also been updated to read as the 2008 versions. The new 2022 versions of those two were not released on Friday, but I would expect those both to come at a later date.
One thing that might bother some people is that this new track doesn’t have the ability to race at night in cars that don’t have headlights.
The lights around the track are just for show, as just like the previous build, they do not turn on.
It was rumored that there might be a track cut penalty for racing below the red and white striped line, but that also isn’t included, despite the rule being enforced in NASCAR.
Besides the Atlanta update, which I’ll get into next, there were a few more details included in Friday’s patch.
The New Damage Model was both updated to include engine damages once again, plus other damage-related items listed below. Speaking of NDM, a slew of dirt cars, such as the Sprint Car, Late Model and Modified, were all updated to have the NDM features.
NEW ATLANTA = “DAYTONA IN A CAN”
In two early morning sessions on Friday, some of the iRacing faithful were chomping at the bit to get to try out the new configuration. I set up two servers and hosted fields of 40 cars in the NASCAR NEXT Gen. One of my contacts at iRacing had a great saying for this track – “Daytona in a can”. It races like Daytona, Talladega or iRacing Superspeedway would if you just condensed them. Brilliant.
While I was hosting my races, there were other sessions that went up in hosted with different cars around the service, including other NASCAR-type vehicles and I think I even saw one with the IndyCar Dallara IR-18.
In our races, hosting the NEXT Gen cars that will take to the 28 degree banking in two weekends, it was a fun time but very chaotic. In the first race, we ran with iRacing cautions enabled, but could never get more than two laps straight under green flag conditions. For the second race, cautions were set to Admin-only to allow more green flag racing, even if wrecks occurred.
There were some great battles towards the front, with about 15 or so cars in the pack, but just about every other lap had some sort of incident among the rest of the field. We re-stacked the field a few more times before the end of the race, but every time, it always resulted in carnage.
Like the real-world event back in March, it definitely felt like a condensed or concentrated pack of cars. With the racing surface less wide than the previous configuration, and the track shorter than the other superspeedway-type courses, it definitely invited the chaos alongside the novelty of this type of racing.
At the old Atlanta, it mattered about saving tires and backing up the corner. Those days are over now, as at the new venue, you’ll be experiencing Daytona or Talladega with the possibility of more carnage. Still, that’s the type of racing I prefer, so I’m not complaining in the slightest. Old Atlanta is still there if you want it, but the new Atlanta is here, and it’s here to stay.

Further fixes and updated are listed underneath in the patch notes. Did you happen to get the new Atlanta today? Do you prefer the NDM on the dirt cars now? What do you hope drops in the next update? Let us know in the comments below!
